My decision to retire from teaching math at Roosevelt High in June 2011 at age 64 was precipitated by unresolved health problems. Although I had consulted with a number of different doctors none of them were able to alleviate symptoms such as hoarseness and fatigue which were compromising my ability to teach. About a year later during a routine eye check my ophthalmologist suggested that my mannerisms were consistent with Parkinson’s disease. In June 2012 I was officially diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. It was a relief to put a name to my condition and to find out that although PD is not curable it is treatable. I see my neurologist regularly, I am taking 2 medications for Parkinson’s and I participate each week in physical activities intended to counteract the stiffening of muscles and joints associated with this disease. I enjoy spending time with my four grandchildren (2, 4, 5 and 6) and other family members and I am an active member of our local church. Ultimately my future is in God’s hands. I am trusting Jesus Christ to provide me with the health, strength and inspiration I need to fulfill his purposes for my life.
An avid cyclist, I enjoy participating in rides sponsored by pedalandroll.org which promotes cycling and other activities as therapy for the effects of Parkinson’s disease. Pictured here are a number friends who recently enjoyed riding with this group. Included in the picture with the larger number of people is my brother John E. Anderson, (RHS ‘65) who was visiting from Atlanta and went along for the ride.

Meeting Jan Worrell in orchestra class was the most significant thing that happened to me while a student at Roosevelt High. After high school we reconnected in the University of Minnesota Orchestra. Jan and I were married in 1968 and had a wonderful life together until she died from cancer January 11, 1974 two days after her 28th birthday.
A few years later our church published an inspirational booklet of Jan’s reflections on life subtitled “A Christian View of Evil ,Suffering Death”. I still have a quantity of these booklets and will make them available free to anyone who might be interested.

I taught math at Roosevelt High School 1997-2011. . Eight of those years my math classroom was the choir room. What was once a middle class college prep environment is an inner city school known for the "achievement gap". When we attended RHS the 2500+ students were 99% white. Currently the 900+ students are 75-80% students of color including many East African and Latino. English Language Learners. A challenging environment but I enjoyed it.
